A2 Writing Exam Practice: Emails, Forms and Short Messages

A2 writing is not about long essays. It is about clear, simple Dutch that answers the task.

Key points

  • Write short sentences and answer every instruction.
  • Use a simple email structure: greeting, reason, request, closing.
  • For forms, give complete and relevant information.

What A2 writing tasks can include

A2 writing tasks may ask you to write a short email, fill in a form, send a note, or answer a question with a few simple sentences.

The topic is usually practical: school, doctor, work, housing, appointment, course, child, payment, or a problem.

A safe email structure

  • Beste meneer/mevrouw,
  • Ik schrijf u omdat ...
  • Important detail: date, time, reason, or problem.
  • Kunt u mij helpen? / Kan ik een nieuwe afspraak maken?
  • Met vriendelijke groet, your name.

What a good A2 answer does

A good answer is complete, understandable, and appropriate for the situation. It does not need advanced grammar. It should use simple sentence structure, correct basic verbs, and clear information.

Common mistakes

  • Writing too little and missing one of the instructions.
  • Using long sentences that become grammatically confusing.
  • Forgetting the greeting or closing in an email task.

Simple practice plan

  1. Practise one form, one formal email, one informal email, and one free text.
  2. Check whether every instruction is answered.
  3. Rewrite the answer in shorter sentences.
  4. Use feedback to fix repeated grammar mistakes.
