A2 Speaking Exam Practice: Build Simple Confident Answers

Speaking practice should help you answer clearly at A2 level, even if your Dutch is not fluent yet.

Key points

  • A2 speaking rewards understandable, relevant answers.
  • Simple sentences are usually better than risky long sentences.
  • Picture questions need structure: what you see, where, action, and opinion.

What speaking practice should train

Many A2 learners are not fluent, and that is normal. The goal is to answer the task with simple Dutch, clear pronunciation, and enough relevant information.

You should practise short answers, picture descriptions, and daily-life responses such as making an appointment or explaining a problem.

Useful speaking patterns

  • Ik zie ...
  • Op de foto zijn ...
  • De man/vrouw/kinderen ...
  • Ik denk dat ...
  • Ik kan niet komen, omdat ...
  • Kunt u mij helpen?

How to sound more confident

Prepare sentence starters. Speak slowly enough to finish the sentence. If you make a mistake, continue. A clear complete answer is better than stopping because one word was not perfect.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to speak too fast.
  • Giving only one or two words instead of a complete answer.
  • Describing a picture without saying what people are doing.

Simple practice plan

  1. Record short answers of 20 to 45 seconds.
  2. Use simple sentence starters.
  3. Listen back once and check whether the answer is complete.
  4. Practise the same prompt again with one improvement.
