Exam overview
A2 Inburgering Exam: What to Practise First
A practical overview of the A2 inburgering exam sections and how to turn limited study time into focused practice.
Key points
- The A2 exam checks practical Dutch for everyday life.
- Practice should cover five skills: Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking, and KNM.
- A balanced routine helps you find weak areas before exam day.
What the A2 exam is testing
The A2 level is about useful Dutch in normal daily situations. You should be able to understand short texts, follow simple conversations, write short messages, answer spoken prompts, and recognise practical Dutch society topics.
For most learners, the challenge is not one difficult grammar rule. The challenge is speed, confidence, and knowing what information to look for in a short time.
The main exam skills
- Reading: understand letters, notices, emails, schedules, and short practical texts.
- Listening: understand short conversations, announcements, appointments, and instructions.
- Writing: complete forms and write short emails, messages, or simple answers.
- Speaking: answer questions, describe pictures, and respond to everyday situations.
- KNM: recognise practical information about living, working, school, health care, and rules in the Netherlands.
How to practise when you are busy
Use short sessions and review mistakes immediately. A useful routine is one timed practice set, one review of wrong answers, and one focused mini-session on the weakest area.
If you only practise the section you like, your score may feel better than your real readiness. Mix the skills across the week, then use your dashboard to decide what needs attention next.
Common mistakes
- Only learning word lists and not practising exam-style questions.
- Ignoring writing and speaking until the last week.
- Reading too slowly because every unknown word feels important.
Simple practice plan
- Start with one Reading or KNM sample to understand the question style.
- Do a timed session for your weakest skill.
- Review mistakes and write down 5 useful Dutch phrases.
- Repeat with another skill the next day.
